shooting with lights

Hired some lights the other week with old friend Nat Brunovs. We used each other as models in order to test our ability to take a decent portrait. It’s hard work thinking about a finished product and then working your way back with the lights in order to create it. It’s definitely a process worth developing thou, and would be helped by sketching, or other form of visualisation first. We ended up just wanting to experiment with the lights and tools available, rather than thinking of a definitive shot – perhaps all studio shoots end up this way?

Below is my favourite shot from the shoot. I like it for the inky blackness around the subject, particularly around the bottom where her top fades into the shadows. She’s just a face and arms. It’s also a solid representation of Ms. Brunovs, guarded and mysterious, yet glamorous and forward.

lately life’s been getting in the way of my life drawing, but last night I finally fixed that and went along to re-ignite my passion. i’m getting a bit cramped by the small moleskine so I’m going to endeavour to bring along some A1 paper and Conte for the next session.

Launched today is the all new FTI website. FTI is the Film and Television Institute of WA, responsible for some of the finest animators, filmmakers, animations and films in Australia!
